Lemons for Literacy

More than 21 million Americans can’t read at all, and 45 million are marginally illiterate and one-fifth of high school graduates can’t read their diplomas (Department of Justice, 2010).

Reading Horizons, a reading software publisher, launched Lemons for Literacy game on its website https://readinghorizons.website/lemonsforliteracy/lemons.html

in February 2009 to help combat illiteracy. So far, almost 400,000 ounces of virtual lemonade has been squeezed – that’s 12,500 gallons of juice – resulting in more than $20,000 in reading help.

Recently The Literacy Center of Coconino County located in Arizona completed the game and was awarded more than $5000 in reading software and direct instruction materials by participating in the vocabulary game. Center directors Caryn Davis and Anne Beck, placed a direct link to the game on the each of their tutoring lab computers. Students, staff, volunteers, and friends of the center were encouraged to play the vocabulary game by filling glasses with lemonade. Once all the glasses are filled, the school gets free online reading helps and materials.

The Literacy Center of Coconino County serves students from all walks of life, many under the federal poverty level. The English speaking population (Basic Literacy Learners) with reading levels ranging from 1st to 6th grade levels come in to learn how to fill out job applications, read menus, improve employment skills, obtain jobs, read to their children, help with children’s homework, use the library, and use a computer.

“We have already seen a difference in how our learners are progressing through the program and the new version is great! It also helps our volunteers to feel as if they can guide a learner through the program, even without have previous teaching or tutoring experience.” Caryn Davis
